Materials:
- Two skeins white crochet yarn
- Crochet stiffener
- 2 round ballons
- 4" styro foam ball
- purchased hat or a child's sock and a 2" piece of string
- 2 googly eyes
- 3 1/2" buttons
- 6" x 1 " piece of red or green felt
- 1/4" red pom pom
- Three 1/4" black pom poms or three small black buttons
- Hot glue gun and glue sticks
Instructions:
Blow up one of the balloons until it measures about 34" around at the
widest part. Tie a knot in the end.
Tie the end of one of the yarn skeins to the knot on the ballon. Wrap
the yarn around the ballon, crisscrossing the yarn randomly until you've
used all of the yarn. Tie the end of the yarn to the knot again, leaving
a 6" length free.
Repeat the procedure using the second balloon and the second skein of
yarn. This time, blow the balloon up until it measures about 20" around
at the widest part.
One at a time, hold each balloon over a large bowl and pour the crochet
stiffener over them until all the yarn covered. Using the piece of free
hanging yarn, hang the balloons to dry (two days).
Cut off the free hanging yarn and pop the balloons.
Press the largest yarn ball down on a table top to flattne it out on
the bottom (so that the snowman will stand up on a table).
Turn the ball over and flatten the top slightly, too. Then, slightly
flatten the smaller ball on both the bottom and the top. Glue the bottom
of the small ball to the top of the large ball. Let dry.
Glue the styrofoam ball to the top of the small yarn ball.
Make a face on the styrofoam ball: Glue on the googly eyes. Glue the
red pom pom on for a nose and glue the black pom poms (or small black
buttons) on to form a smiling mouth.
Glue the three 1/2" button down the front of the snowman. Place one
on the small yarn ball and two on the large yarn ball.
Wrap the piece of felt around the snowman's neck to make a scarf.
Top with the hat (you may have to tack it on with glue). Or, use a child's
sock to create a touque - turn the sock inside out. At the ankle (just
where the foot joins the ankle) tie the string around the sock and knot
tightly. Cut the foot off the sock about 1/2" above the knot. Turn the
ankle part right side out. Turn up the rim of the sock and glue the touque
on the snowman's head.
