| Appliqued Holiday Towels |
Sometimes I like to add my own touches to
store bought items for last-minute gifts or for instant decorative cheer
when entertaining. Regular white hand towels, for example, make a guest
bathroom more inviting when they are trimmed with red, plaid fabric and
a holiday appliqué. Two of them make a thoughtful gift. Buy regular guest
size towels and use scraps of fabric to make the appliqués. You can zigzag
them in place or use iron-on fusible webbing, such as Stitch Witchery for
a quick and easy project.
Materials:
- small amounts of solid red and green checked fabric
- for each towel: a piece of red plaid fabric 4-6 inches deep by the width of the towel plus 1-1/2 inches
- white hand towels
Instructions:
- Using the red plaid strip of fabric, fold all edges under 1/4 inch and press.
- Pin to the towel so that the bottom edge of the fabric is aligned with the bottom edge of the towel. There should be 1/2 inch extra on each side. Turn these edges to the back and pin.
- Using red thread, stitch across the top and bottom as close to the edge as possible. Then stitch along each side to attach fabric strip.

Print out
the holly and berry patterns and transfer to heavy paper to make templates.
Cut out.
- Trace around holly template on green checked fabric 6 times.
- Trace around berry template on red fabric 6 times. (*Note: For no-sew, iron-on appliqués skip to step 6). Cut out all pieces.
- Pin 3 holly leaves and 3 berries to each towel as shown in photo.
- Using a zigzag stitch and matching thread, stitch around the edges of all appliqué pieces.
- Pin the red berry fabric and the green holly fabric (with drawn patterns) to fusible webbing and cut out all pieces.
- Position each piece on the towel and, using a medium hot iron, press down to fuse together. Hold for 2-3 seconds, then lift iron. The appliqué pieces will be secure enough to go through several washings before they begin to peel away. When this happens, simply cut another piece of the webbing and reapply.
